Uncle Dood’s takes the cake donut and does everything right.
Start with the size. It’s no bigger than the size of your palm, showing smart restraint in a world of increasingly inflated donuts. For what’s about to come, you’ll appreciate this elegantly sized confectionery.
Then there’s the menu. A laminated sheet of 21 colorful, creative creations that will bring out the kid in anyone. The bottom portion changes every month. And of course he’ll have a few daily specials on the chalkboard.
Now for the donut. It comes to you warm, so mouthwateringly fresh. And while I normally prefer yeast donuts, Uncle Dood’s cake is among the fluffiest and moistest I’ve ever had.
The icing, which includes options beyond vanilla and chocolate, melts ever so slightly on that cozy cake of a donut.
My choice that day was the Trix donut, which they recommended with a lemon icing. I can’t remember the last time I had Trix cereal, but this is definitely how grown ups should always have it. Jay had the samoa donut, which similarly, is really a grown up, sophisticated version of the girl scout’s samoa cookies with that warm caramel sauce seeping into that airy cake.
Uncle Dood’s has to be an institution of some sort for the service he has done for cake donuts. If you’re ever anywhere in the realm of South Jersey, do yourself a favor and drop by for breakfast. Or lunch. Or just whenever they’re open (6:30 am to 3 pm on weekdays and 1 pm on weekends).
